Historic 18th-century church and monastery ruins built by Franciscan Recollects, featuring impressive skeletal architecture and peaceful gardens.
This imposing historic site features the skeletal remains of an 18th-century church and monastery built by Franciscan Recollects between 1701-1715. Located behind the Mercado Central on Antigua's outskirts, the ruins represent what was once one of the largest churches in Guatemala's former capital. Originally constructed after Recollect friars received a royal writ in 1700, the massive compound included cloisters, refectories, housing, study rooms, and an infirmary. Though inaugurated in 1717, the structure suffered repeated earthquake damage, with the devastating 1773 seismic event ultimately forcing its abandonment when the capital moved to Guatemala City. Today, visitors can explore the atmospheric ruins and walk among the walls that still convey the site's former grandeur. The well-maintained gardens provide a peaceful, contemplative setting perfect for picnicking in the shade. Open daily from 9am-5pm, the site offers an impressive glimpse into colonial religious architecture and history. Entrance fees are Q40 for foreigners, with facilities including restrooms and accessible pathways throughout the ruins.
